Badrinath Ki Dulhania is an upcoming Indian romantic drama film, directed by Shashank Khaitan, and produced by Karan Johar under the Dharma Productions banner. Starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, the film marks the second installment of a franchise that began with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014).
One of great jodi that Bollywood ever had. Name it SRK-Kajol, Govinda-Karisma and others. To be noted, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania nothing particularly prequel or sequel. It’s just same Hero-Heroine which Karan Johar put in this Dulhania venture.
Jhansi Ki Rani
At the very first scene appear is to let the audience know about setting of this movie, which is Jhansi. It has its own renowned Queen, Lakshmibai. No it has nothing to do with Her. Shashank Khaitan trying to portray a non patriarchy movement with the subtle story line. It is not a new thing in the industry, the main thing in this movie is the actors, nothing more.
Before begin with the review, I’d like to give a warm hug to Varun Dhawan. He is surely a comedian by nature because both of his brother and father working a lot with action comedy movies. From Student of the Year till Badrinath Ki Dulhania, he’s progressing, not as fast as Alia, but he’s progressing a lot in drama venture. But still, we can’t really get him serious for once, right?
Badrinath Ki Dulhania
By looking at his own brother, Badri (Varun Dhawan) always tell him self to not falling in love before marriage, because it will lead to a misery later on. He meets Vaidehi (Alia Bhatt) on a wedding function of his relative, then falls for her but not doing filmy moves like other romance. But he asks Somdev (Sahil Vaid) for connect her by a matrimony service which Somdev build, Wedding-at-snap (something like that).
Both Trivedi’s daughter are not married, and the older, Kritika is in her late prime age for marriage. So the family will do anything to marry her off. The Batman and Robin do anything to find a good match for Kritika. They meet Bhushan (Aparshakti Khurrana) as a NRI (Non-resident Indian). Vaidehi will marry if her sister is marry as well. All set.
Her gut tell her to pursue her dream first than being locked in an organization name marriage. Yes, she left him at the altar.
Dowry and Patriarchy
This is a social issue that has been an issue around the nation (India) one of them is Dawaat-e-Ishq, Aditya Roy Kapur and Parineeti Chopra starrer. Having a son is a bless, having a daughter is a sin, ups, not so bless. Why? Because later on, the bride will pay huge amount of money to get married and still drop their surname and live with the in laws.
Vaidehi is a middle class society with a dream and dream job. She wants to enjoy her life the way she wants, but it will be impossible in Jhansi whereas Jhansi known for its Rani. From Kota to Mumbai and ending up in Singapore.
Right after interval, which is the moment Vaidehi ditches her groom, Badri has full emotions in his heart. Things he knows is just violent. Till the news is coming to Jhansi and he go for her, intend to save her from his mischievous father, Ambernath Bansal.
The plot is very mediocre, by all means, Vaidehi and Badri meet in Singapore and it makes her stumble a bit. For all love Badri has, he lets Vaidehi lives in peace just for her future, the women he loves the most. Singapore, the busiest city in Southeast Asia is making them reunite once more. Tears that has been shed by Badri is not even dry yet, but he has to live in a custody of Kiran and Vaidehi.
That will make the vulnerable Badri can’t get over Vaidehi even he has his Dulhania, selected by his father, far away in Jhansi. He can’t disobey the rule of his father, and left to Jhansi. While he’s trying to be normal in Jhansi, Vaidehi starting to feel the emptiness which leads her back to Jhansi.
In a word, Varun Dhawan doesn’t need Alia Bhatt, or to put it simple, Badrinath Ki Dulhania still going strong just by Varun and some good quality and chemistry actress. Alia Bhatt is highly a queen right after 4 years of work. She needs another challenge. But matter of fact, jodi is a rare thing to begin with. As stated on first paragraph, Alia-Varun is a jodi. Even this movie better than Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, but one thing for sure, Varun Dhawan is progressing a lot. (saf)
